Parables of the Talents

Capitol

[[When I wrote this, I was at the Christian Community Development Association conference Reconciliation in Minneapolis. This parable was inspired by John Perkins’ Bible Study one morning.]]

As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Washington, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.

So he said, “For it is as if the president, going on a journey, summoned the people of his country and surveyed their possessions. He saw three people who each had $10,000. Upon his return, he came to his people and summoned them to find out what they might have gained by trading.

“The first, a Wall Street broker, came forward and said, ‘Mr. President, this $10,000 has been made $10,000,000,000.’

“He said to him, ‘Well done, you have been successful in these things, so I will give you even more.’

“The second, a banker, came to him and said, ‘Mr. President, this $10,000 has been made $10,000,000.’

“He said to him, ‘Well done, you have been successful in these things, so I will give you more.’

“The third, a worker, came to him and said, ‘Mr. President, this $10,000 has become $5,000, for I needed to feed my family and my friends. I did what I can.’

“And he said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words. You know that I am a harsh man — why then did you not put it in a bank? Take the $5,000 from him and give it to the one who has $10,000,000,000. For I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’”
